Vaas, Jayasuriya in the Sri Lankan mix
Sri Lanka selectors have named Sanath Jayasuriya and Chaminda Vaas in the training camp
Sanath Jayasuriya wants to bow out on a high at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.
Both Vaas and Jayasuriya began training with the national squad earlier this week. The training camp is a prelude to selection for the upcoming Australia tour and more importantly the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.
Vaas last played for Sri Lanka in 2008 and Jayasuriya has not featured in a Sri Lanka line-up since earlier this year. The two senior players have already called it a day in Test cricket. Vaas and Jayasuriya are keen to end their careers at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.
Man of the series of the ICC Cricket World Cup 1996, Jayasuriya, recently played twenty20 cricket for Worcestershire in English county circuit. He managed two half-centuries in ten matches with a best of 87. Over the last 12 months, Jayasuriya has played just six One-Day Internationals for Sri Lanka and nine twenty20 internationals. He averaged 14.16 and 12.00, respectively, during that period.
Jayasuriya said his bad form was a temporary setback in an interview with Al Jazeera. "Every batsman goes through a rough time every two years or so. In Twenty20 and 50 overs I was going through a lean patch, but I want to come back," he said.
On the other hand Vaas had a fruitful run with Northamptonshire in the twenty20 tournament in English county circuit. Vaas opened the batting scoring 412 runs and also picked up 23 wickets. "I am happy that they invited me to train with the rest of the lads, but, nothing is finalised yet,” Vaas told The Sunday Times in Sri Lanka.
Chairman of selectors Aravinda de Silva, also a ICC Cricket World Cup 1996 winner, kept his options open on the selection of the veteran duo.
"Yes, they are training with the national squad at present, but, nothing is finalised yet. We do need some bowlers at the nets. It is good that they (Vaas and Jayasuriya) too can find time to train here. We will be selecting a final pool of players a little later," said Chairman of Selectors Aravinda de Silva.
