No play in Headingley ODI

Umpires abandon first England-Australia ODI following heavy rain

No play in Headingley ODI - Cricket News

Rain played spoilsport as the first ODI was washed out without a ball being bowled.

The first One-Day International between England and Australia in Headingley, Leeds was washed out without a ball being bowled after heavy rain flooded the ground on Friday (September 6).

The on-field umpires abandoned play after inspecting the waterlogged outfield for a third time at 1130 GMT.

Drenched groundstaff tried in vain to sweep away puddles, which had grown larger by the hour, on the outfield and the big Headingley covers. But persistent rain gave them little respite and no chance of beating the odds.

The two teams will now have to wait until Sunday to resume battle in the second of five ODIs, to be played at Old Trafford.
