Ireland closes in on victory

Ireland moved closer to victory against Canada after day two of the ICC Intercontinental Cup match in Toronto

Ireland moved closer to victory against Canada after day two of the ICC Intercontinental Cup match in Toronto.

It achieved a first innings lead of 141 runs, thanks in the main to Andrew White (84), who helped Ireland to 261 all out. Credit should be given to Canada's bowlers though, in particular Henry Osinde (5-68) who stuck to their task, with none of the last six Irish batters reaching double figures.

In reply, Canada looked to be in a promising position at 136-1, but a flurry of wickets saw the hard work of Zubin Surkari (72) and Ruvindu Gunasekera (47) go to waste as it closed on 190-8.

Ireland, who used eight bowlers in the second innings, had Kevin O'Brien and Andre Botha to thank for taking three wickets apiece, especially as first-innings hero Trent Johnston was missing through injury having been hit on the head by a Henry Osinde bouncer earlier in the day.

Canada, who has a slender 49-run lead, will need Ashish Bagai (31 not out) to bat brilliantly on the third day if his side is to have any chance of winning.
