Ireland moved a step closer to beginning its campaign in the ICC Intercontinental Cup with an emphatic win in the opening encounter against Namibia at the Civil Service Cricket Club, Stormont.

Ireland needs just 38 more runs to register an emphatic win over Namibia on the final day of the contest.

On the third day of the match, Namibia began at its overnight score of 58 for one with just four runs ahead on the first innings.

Namibia had only Christi Viljoen to thank for as he held the innings together. Viljoen made a steady 136 ball 87 with ten boundaries. Namibia skipper Craig Williams (40: 43b, 8x4) and Raymond van Schoor (35: 73b, 3x4) were the other handy contributors.

For Ireland, John Mooney (2-43), George Dockrell (3-41) and Kevin O'Brien (2-19) shared the wickets around. Namibia was finally bowled out for 226 in 79.3 overs.

Set to chase 173 for a win, Ireland's innings was kickstarted by a brisk knock by Paul Stirling (53: 44b, 8x4). Alex Cusack (42: 63b, 8x4) was the other contributor as Ireland pushed along towards the score.

When umpires finally called off play for the day owing to bad light, Ireland still needed 38 more runs to complete an emphatic win.

Ireland will get an opportunity to complete the last rites on Friday, the final day of the contest.
