In an action-packed first day at the Mombasa Sports Club ground, 22 wickets fell in the ICC Intercontinental Cup game between Kenya and Ireland.

Ireland batting first was bowled out for 75 with just Ed Joyce making the top score of 26.

Left-arm spinner Hiren Varaiya (6-22) and Shem Ngoche (3-11) picked up the wickets for Kenya.

In its reply, Kenya fared no better. Kenya slipped to 50-7 before a 41-run seventh wicket stand between Nelson Odhiambo (17) and Ragheb Aga (46) gave the host a slender lead.

Thereafter Ireland spin duo of Albert van der Merwe (5-41) and George Dockrell (5-37) spun a web around the Kenya tail to bowl out the home team for 109.

Kenya had an overall lead of 34.

In its second innings, Ireland started off much better with the openers putting on 63. But Paul Stirling and William Porterfield fell in quick succession.

Towards the close of play, Joyce (51 batting: 56b, 7x4, 1x6) was holding fort for the visitors with the score reading 81 for 2 when stumps were drawn for the day.
