Pakistan completes T20I sweep

West Indies crashes to 11-run defeat in low-scoring contest

Pakistan completes T20I sweep - Cricket News
Ahmed Shehzad's 44 runs proved to be crucial and helped Pakistan reach a competitive score of 135.

A late West Indian surge failed to bear fruit as Pakistan completed a clean sweep of their two-match Twenty20 International series, winning the second game by 11 runs at the Arnos Vale Stadium in St Vincent on Sunday (July 28).

After making 135-7, Pakistan kept West Indies down to 124-9 to complete a 2-0 series triumph, a result which pushed it up to No. 2 in the ICC T20I rankings, behind Sri Lanka. West Indies, which won the ICC World T20 2012 in Sri Lanka last year, slipped to fourth spot in the rankings.

After Pakistan had ridden on an unbeaten 46 by man of the match Umar Akmal and 44 by opener Ahmed Shehzad, West Indies never looked like scaling down the modest target once it was reduced to 17-4 on a surface more sub-continental than Caribbean, a slow turner which was perfectly suited to Pakistan’s four-pronged spin attack.

Spinners Sunil Narine and Samuel Badree had shown the way when West Indies bowled with five wickets among themselves, and Pakistan’s spinners led by Saeed Ajmal followed suit, tying up the West Indian batsmen and ensuring that Pakistan rounded off a successful tour with another victory. Pakistan had clincehd the preceding One-Day International series 3-1, with one match tied.

West Indies staged a mid-innings fightback through Dwayne Bravo, who made 35, and Narine, who made the most of being promoted by slamming an aggressive 28. Kieron Pollard then took 20 runs off the first four deliveries of the 17th over sent down by left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar, but it was Babar who had the last laugh, having Pollard caught at deep cover and getting rid of Bravo next ball, holing out to wide long-off.

Babar, who took three wickets and hit a six off the last delivery to play a lead role in the first T20I on Saturday, was named the man of the series.
