Ireland closes in on innings win over Scotland

Scotland still 69 runs short of making Ireland bat again with only two second-innings wickets in hand

Ireland closes in on innings win over Scotland - Cricket News
Max Sorensen's four wickets in the second innings put Ireland on the verge of an innings victory.
Scotland edged towards an innings defeat against Ireland after the third day of the four-day ICC Intercontinental Cup match between the two sides at Clontarf Cricket Club in Dublin on Friday (September 13).

The day started with Ireland on a strong 99 for 1 in response to Scotland’s first-innings score of 138. But super spells of bowling from Moneeb Iqbal (4 for 68) and Majid Haq (4 for 69) helped Scotland bowl Ireland out for 350.

For Ireland, a number of batsmen made healthy contributions, but none of them went on to register a really big score. Paul Stirling (65), John Anderson (56), Kevin O’Brien (45) and Andrew Balbirnie (38) were the ones to score most of the runs as nine of the batsmen reached double figures.

Having conceded a 212-run lead, Scotland needed its batsmen to settle down and get runs on the board, but that didn’t happen as Max Sorensen (4 for 32) and Graeme McCarter (2 for 17) led the way in reducing Scotland to 143 for 8 by close of play on the third day.

At one point, after 24 overs, Scotland was tottering at 64 for 7. But a 79-run stand between Haq (31 not out) and Safyaan Sharif (60) raised its hopes till, on the last ball of the day, William Porterfield, the Ireland captain, pulled off a stunning diving catch at short extra cover to send Sharif back.
