There was no place for Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan; Ravindra Jadeja has been ruled out because of a shoulder strain
The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced the Test squad for the two matches home series against West Indies on Thursday (October 31).
Mohammad Shami, currently part of the One-Day International team for the series against Australia, was one of four pacers included in the squad that also features Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ishant Sharma.
Zaheer, who has been out of the Test squad since December 2012, was tipped by some to spearhead the pace attack after making an impressive return to first-class cricket. He picked up five wickets in Mumbai’s four-wicket win over Haryana in the Ranji Trophy opener in Lahli. Prior to that, he had taken seven wickets in two first-class outings for India A against West Indies A in Shimoga and Hubli.
R Ashwin. Pragyan Ojha and Amit Mishra were the three specialist spinners, while Ravindra Jadeja, who played all four Tests against Australia in March, was left out after being advised rest for a shoulder strain. There was no place for Harbhajan Singh, who picked up nine wickets to lead Punjab to victory over Odisha in their Ranji Trophy opener in Mohali.
Shikhar Dhawan, who missed India’s last Test with a finger injury after a sensational Test debut against Australia in Mohali, was brought back in and was likely to open with Murali Vijay. Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit are the reserve batsmen chosen.
