Muzumdar named Netherlands batting consultant

Indian domestic star to also continue playing in the Netherlands league

Amol Muzumdar has been named as the Netherlands' batting consultant for the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2014, scheduled for January and February in New Zealand next year.

Muzumdar, who has played 171 first-class games, is the most capped Ranji Trophy player. He decided to pull out of the Andhra Pradesh team earlier this month to allow younger players to come to the fore, taking up the role to groom them instead.

Muzumdar said the Netherlands offer was an “excellent opportunity”. “I said yes because my contract with Andhra (as a player) ends in January. It’s not often that you get an opportunity to go with a side to the World Cup, so I said yes,” Muzumdar told Wisden India.

This will be Muzumdar’s first association with a national side, although he has been a player-cum-coach for Quick Hague, a league cricket team in the Netherlands, for three years now.

As a player, he helped Quick Hague win the Topklasse title for the first time in 27 years in 2013. “I’ve been going there as a coach-cum-player. I’ve been doing this (coaching) when I was there. Not officially, but I was helping them out whenever I was in Amsterdam. It’s been good. I’ve enjoyed my stint over there in Netherlands,” he said.

Muzumdar will also continue playing with the VOC Cricket Club in Rotterdam after completing his contract with Quick Hague.

Muzumdar has played alongside current national team members James Gruijters, Tim Gruijters and Wesley Barresi, and felt the familiarity would help him as a coach.

“I know most of the players that are in the team. I know most of the batsmen, they’ve been very good players in league cricket. The national team has got a good batting line-up and I plan to work with each one of them in the four weeks I’ll be with them,” said Muzumdar.

Netherlands is pooled in Group B with Kenya, Namibia, Papua New Guinea and Uganda for the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2014 after it finished fourth in the World Cricket League in October.

Muzumdar will join Netherlands in Dubai before heading to New Zealand for the start of the tournament on January 13.
