Pakistan cricketers Younis Khan (R) and Misbah-ul-Haq (L) look on at the drinks break during the day's play.
Younus Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq hit unwavering half-centuries to keep Pakistan's hopes alive in the second Test in Dubai on Friday (January 10).

Younus and Misbah remained unbeaten on 62 and 52 respectively by stumps on the third day to help Pakistan reach a score of 132 for 3.

Younus and Misbah -- who both hit hundreds in Abu Dhabi last week -- came to Pakistan’s rescue at a time when it was struggling at 19 for 3, with an unbeaten fourth-wicket partnership of 113.

Sri Lanka had earlier built a big 223-run lead with a first innings score of 388 in reply to Pakistan’s 165.

Nuwan Pradeep gave Pakistan early wobbles ending the day on 2 for 28. Pradeep, who took a career best 3 for 62 in the first innings, had Mohammad Hafeez caught behind in his second over, and in his fourth, swung one across Khurram Manzoor as Prasanna Jayawardena, the wicketkeeper, grabbed on to his seventh catch of the match.

Pakistan had lost Ahmed Shehzad, the opener, in the last over before lunch, caught behind for nine off Rangana Herath.
With three wickets down and still needing 91 runs to avoid an innings defeat, it was left to Younis and Misbah to fight one more time for Pakistan. Younis was more cautious, reaching his 28th half-century with a single off Rangana Herath and continued to bat with conviction during his 142-ball stay, hitting four boundaries.

Earlier, resuming at 318 for 4, Sri Lanka lost Angelo Mathews, the skipper, caught behind by Sarfraz Ahmed off Rahat Ali in the second over of the day, without adding to his overnight score of 42. Mahela Jayawardena hit a fighting 129 off 278 balls in a knock that included 15 fours.
