Viljoen stars in Namibia win

Christi Viljoen's all-round performance handed Namibia a 91-run victory against Netherlands in the fifth Group B clash of the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier at Mount Maunganui on Wednesday (January 15).

Despite getting off to starts, none of Namibia's top order batsmen managed to get past fifty. At 158 for 5, it needed a partnership of substance to post a good total, which Gerrie Synman, who made 74, along with Viljoen, who made 46, provided.

The two put together an 85-run stand for the sixth wicket to post 253 for 6 in 50 overs. Netherlands lost wickets at regular intervals and was bowled out for 162 in 36.5 overs.

Netherlands didn't look like being on track to chase down the challenging total as it was rattled by early blows from Louis Klazinga and JJ Smit, who removed Michael Swart (3), the opener, and Wesley Barresi (5) respectively, inside the first five overs. Stephan Myburgh and captain Peter Borren shared a 37-run stand for the third wicket, before the next three wickets fell in the span of four runs as Netherlands limped to 66 for 5.

Although the Netherlands batsmen shared a few partnerships down the order, the task at hand increasingly looked a lost cause. Bernard Scholtz and Viljoen bagged six wickets between them to bowl Netherlands out for 162. Viljoen ended with figures of 4 for 33 in 6.5 overs, while Scholtz and Klazinga picked up two wickets each.

Namibia will play Kenya in its next Group B match on Friday while Netherlands takes on Papua New Guinea in the 12th match of the tournament on Sunday.
