New Zealand wins rain-hit first T20I

McCullum, Taylor play key roles with the bat to take team home by 12 runs (D/L method)

New Zealand wins rain-hit first T20I - Cricket News
Brendon McCullum of New Zealand scores 40 off 35 balls.
Relying on its two most experienced players, New Zealand took a 1-0 lead in the two-match Twenty20 International series by defeating the West Indies by 12 runs on the basis of the Duckworth/Lewis method in a rain-affected game at the Windsor Park in Dominica on Saturday (July 5).

In reply to West Indies’ 132 for 8 in 18 overs, New Zealand was on course of the target at 117 for 4 after 15 overs when a persistent drizzle accompanied by fading light forced the umpires to halt the match.

Coming to the crease after Krishmar Santokie had Jimmy Neesham bowled off the inside edge, captain Brendon McCullum led the chase for New Zealand with an innings of 40 off 35 balls to wrest the initiative for his team despite a three-wicket burst by his West Indies counterpart, Darren Sammy.

He found an able partner in Kane Williamson, and the duo put together 53 for the second wicket before Williamson became Sammy's first wicket.

McCullum's knock, with the support of Ross Taylor (28 not out), overshadowed Andre Fletcher's game-changing innings of 52 off 39 balls that took West Indies to a competitive total after they were in trouble at 10 for 2.

Taylor hit two sixes and a four off an over from allrounder Andre Russell that saw New Zealand far ahead of the required rate that victory was a formality from that point.

Debutant Ish Sodhi was the only New Zealand bowler to suffer against the West Indies batsmen, conceding 35 runs off three overs. He, however, claimed the wicket of Fletcher just at the point where he was set to accelerate further.

Fletcher and Darren Bravo (30) put on 88 for the third wicket for the West Indies, but excellent bowling from Tim Southee (2 for 20) restricted them in the critical final overs.

The final match is scheduled for Sunday at the same venue.
