Ireland bowlers fight hard, but with only 153 on the board, host completes three-wicket win in 34th over
Northern Districts registered a three-wicket win over Ireland XI on the visitor’s ICC High Performance tour of Australia and New Zealand on Thursday (October 16).
Choosing to bowl first, the host bowled Ireland out for 153 before polishing off the chase in the 34th over.
Ireland was on the mat at 58 for 5, after losing Andrew Balbirnie (2), Andrew Poynter (0) and Stuart Poynter (4), three of the top five batsmen, for single-digit scores, before Kevin O’Brien and Alex Cusack (20) tried to resurrect the innings with a 53-run stand, helping the visiting side take the score past the 100-run mark.
A brief resistance from the tail followed, but Northern Districts’ bowlers had inflicted enough damage to restrict Ireland to a below-par score. O’Brien battled valiantly with a 78-ball 45, with George Dockrell also chipping in with 28.
Jono Boult, the offspinner, starred with the ball, picking up three wickets for just three runs from 2.4 over to clean up the tail. Tony Goodin and Anurag Verma also contributed with two wickets each.
In reply, Northern Districts was reduced to 19 for 2 but a resilient 80-run stand between Joe Carter (42) and Daryl Mitchell (39) brought the innings back on track. Soon after Carter was dismissed in the 25th over, the Ireland bowlers threatened a late twist in the game as the host slipped to 112 for 5.
However, Jono Hickey (29) and Tim Seifert (17 not out) kept their calm and guided the team close to the total. Dockrell then struck twice with scores level before Seifert smashed a boundary to complete the win.
