Shakib stars in big Bangladesh win

All-rounder slams 99-ball 101 before grabbing 4 for 41 as host prevails by 87 runs against Zimbabwe

Shakib stars in big Bangladesh win - Cricket News
Shakib Al Hasan, the all-rounder, played a starring role as Bangladesh cruised to an 87-run win over Zimbabwe in the first One-Day international in Chittagong on Friday (21 November).

Shakib became only the 12th player in ODI history to score a century and claim four or more wickets in a single match.

His innings of 101 proved vital for the host, which had been reduced to 31 for 3 at one stage, with Tendai Chatara doing most of the early damage.

Shakib put on 39 for the fourth wicket with Mominul Haque (31), who was bowled by John Nyumbu in the 20th over.

Shakib (101) and Mushfiqur Rahim, the captain, then added 148 for the fifth wicket before the former fell lofting Tafadzwa Kamungozi to Tinashe Panyangara at long-on as he looked for a first six of his innings.

Mushfiqur went on to make 65 and Bangladesh continued to pile on the runs courtesy Sabbir Rahman, whose debut ODI innings yielded an unbeaten 44 off just 25 balls with three fours and three sixes. Bangladesh’s innings eventually closed on 281 for 7.

Zimbabwe made a decent start to its chase, scoring at more than run a ball until a pivotal eighth over from Shakib, who had also been in fine form with the bat and ball in the recent Test series.

He accounted for Sikandar Raza (15) and Vusi Sibanda for a second-ball duck, and once opener Hamilton Masakadza fell for 42, Zimbabwe's hopes were all but gone.

Brendan Taylor managed a patient 54 before becoming one of two victims for Mashrafe Mortaza, but none of the other batsmen scored more than 20 with Shakib returning to pick up a couple more wickets and finish with figures of 4 for 41.

The two sides will face each other once again on Sunday in Chittagong.
