The Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires today made a donation of US$10,000 (BD TK777,000) to the Operation Cleft charity, a unique Rotary project that provides free cleft repair surgery for underprivileged children in Bangladesh.

Members of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires, Kumar Dharmasena and Richard Kettleborough, on behalf of their colleagues, presented the cheque to representatives of Operation Cleft at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Thursday.

The project was initiated in September 2005 with a pilot programme of 60 operations at Lamb Hospital Parbatipur, Bangladesh. In 2008, the Operation Cleft Australia Foundation was established to assume full responsibility for all aspects of the project.

Operation Cleft only works in Bangladesh, and focuses specifically on surgery, training and parent and healthcare sector education related to the cause, effect and treatment of cleft lips and palates. To date, Operation Cleft surgeons have completed more than 8,250 operations, of which almost 40 per cent are considered complex surgery.

“We are delighted to make a small contribution to what has been a marvelous work by the Operation Cleft charity here in Bangladesh,” said Steve Davis, speaking on behalf of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires.

“Providing free cleft repair surgery, as well as speech and language therapy to underprivileged children is a great service to the local community. Through its dedication and commitment, Operation Cleft has been able to gift a smile for life, but unfortunately its outstanding work has received little recognition.

“Through this contribution, the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires wants to show unity and solidarity with Operation Cleft, and also wants to play its role in promoting this project so that it creates more awareness in Bangladesh that, in turn, will only benefit the children requiring this support.”

The Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires has supported chosen charities for the last five years. Donations include US$10,000 and SLR one million to the United Kingdom’s Motor Neuron Disease Research and Sri Lanka’s Chitra Lane charity during the ICC World Twenty20 2009 and 2012 respectively.
