ICC to partner with McGrath Foundation, Cancer Society of New Zealand, Room to Read and THINK WISE for the tournament to be held in Australia and New Zealand

ICC announces CSR partnerships for ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 - Cricket News
The ICC will work with the four partners highlighting each of the initiatives at various match days throughout the event.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) today announced the four Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) partnerships that will feature during the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 in Australia and New Zealand.

The ICC will once again be working with Room to Read and will also partner with UNAIDS and UNICEF to deliver the global cricket AIDS awareness partnership THINK WISE. The organisations will be joined for this tournament by theMcGrath Foundation and Cancer Society of New Zealand who are committed to providing the best form of care and support to those affected by cancer in both countries.
 
During the tournament the ICC will work with the four partners hosting a variety of coaching clinics and visits involving players from the participating teams and highlighting each of the initiatives at various match days throughout the event.
 
ICC Chief Executive, David Richardson, said of the four partnerships for the tournament: “I am delighted once again that the ICC is partnering with THINK WISE along with Room to Read to continue promoting both the importance of HIV and AIDS awareness and the education of children around the world.
 
“We are also happy to welcome two leading Cancer charities in the McGrath Foundation and Cancer Society of New Zealand who work so hard in the areas of research, education and providing care for all those affected by the disease across Australia and New Zealand.”
 


The McGrath Foundation was started following the much-publicised experience that Jane McGrath and three-time World Cup winner Glenn McGrath had with breast cancer. Its mission is to raise money to place McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities across Australia as well as increase breast awareness in young Australian women.

“Cricket is much more than what happens on the field,” said McGrath. “It brings people together, is a real force for good in the community and has played a huge part in the McGrath Foundation’s history. I’m delighted the ICC Cricket World Cup has chosen us as one of their official charity partners next year. As the biggest tournament in cricket it will help raise awareness of the work we do in helping families experiencing breast cancer.”

The Cancer Society of New Zealand is dedicated to reducing the incidence and impact of cancer and ensuring the best cancer care for everyone in New Zealand. It provides a range of support services for people with cancer and their family/caregivers. Cancer Society of New Zealand also provides funding for life-saving and world class cancer research.

“The Cancer Society is delighted to be an official charity partner of the ICC 2015 Cricket World Cup. This is a huge opportunity to get our SunSmart messages out there, not only to New Zealanders, but to the thousands of overseas visitors and a worldwide television audience,” said acting Chief Executive, Dr Jan Pearson. “At the games there will be plenty of chances to remind people to think about whether they need to move into the shade or reapply sunscreen  - and of course keep their hats on at all times.”

The ICC piloted a partnership with the educational charity Room to Read during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, and the success of this initiative convinced both parties to extend the relationship through to 2015.

One of the early fruits of this continuation has been the development of local language cricket books to promote literacy. The books feature Sri Lanka Test and ODI Captain Angelo Mathews (Little Angelo’s Big Day Out is available in both Sinhalese and Tamil) and India batsman Virat Kohli (Virat Ki Pari is available in Hindi). Room to Read’s ambition to promote access to literacy and girls’ education has resonated with many of cricket’s leading players including Shane Watson, who is a global champion of this cause.

Dr. Geetha Murali, Room to Read Chief Development Officer, said: “Room to Read is thrilled to continue its partnership with the International Cricket Council at the upcoming Cricket World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. This partnership has helped us reach many more children with the opportunity of a quality education, and we look forward to having an even greater impact on the lives of young children in Asia and Africa.”

The ICC’s THINK WISE partnership with UNAIDS and UNICEF has been raising awareness and reducing stigma around HIV and AIDS since 2003., THINK WISE campaigns have been credited with contributing to reduced levels of stigma and greater levels of awareness in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean.

“Cricket is a passion which unites countries and continents, people and players. The THINK WISE campaign is powerful because it can leverage this passion to mobilize millions of people to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030. By turning young people into leaders, promoting HIV prevention and zero discrimination the campaign will help us reach our goal,” said Steve Kraus, Director, Regional Support Team for Asia and the Pacific, UNAIDS.

Players from the teams taking part in the final will wear red ribbon stickers as a sign of solidarity for people living with HIV and AIDS. The umpires and referees will also sport the THINK WISE logo on their shirt sleeves.

The ICC Cricket World Cup will be played across two countries and 14 venues from 14 February to 29 March 2015.
