Chandimal to lead Sri Lanka in ICC World Twenty20 2014 - Cricket News
Dinesh Chandimal will lead Sri Lanka in the ICC World Twenty20 2014 in Bangladesh.
Dinesh Chandimal will lead Sri Lanka in the ICC World Twenty20 starting in Bangladesh on March 16, with the experienced trio of Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardena also part of the 15-man squad.

Lasith Malinga has been named vice-captain, while the selectors have gone with plenty of spin options keeping the conditions in mind. Ajantha Mendis, Sachithra Senanayake and Seekkuge Prasanna are all included, and Rangana Herath will also be in the squad if fully fit.

Herath, who missed Sri Lanka’s second Test against Bangladesh in Dhaka and the subsequent limited-overs leg of the series, is currently recuperating from an ankle surgery. Chaturanga de Silva, the uncapped allrounder, will take Herath's place if the veteran spinner is ruled out.

Sri Lanka has the benefit of playing a full series against Bangladesh in the build-up to the World T20, and will be acclimatised to the conditions. Sri Lanka won the two-Test series 1-0 and won both Twenty20 Internationals off the last ball and are currently playing in a three-match ODI series.

The Asia Cup will start on February 25 and conclude on March 8, and includes India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

In the World T20, Sri Lanka are placed alongside South Africa, England, New Zealand and a qualifier who is yet to be determined, in Group 1. Sri Lanka lost to West Indies in the final of the last World T20, in October 2012 at home. Before that, they had also made the final at the 2009 event in England, where they finished second best to Pakistan.
