Guptill, Latham slam centuries to help New Zealand level series

Openers set new record for highest successful ODI chase without losing a wicket as Zimbabwe goes down by ten wickets

Guptill, Latham slam centuries to help New Zealand level series - Cricket News
Sikandar Raza hit 100 not out from 95 balls to guide his team to 235 for 9.
Martin Guptill and Tom Latham, the New Zealand openers, struck centuries as their team beat Zimbabwe by ten wickets in the second One-Day International between the two sides at the Harare Sports Club on Tuesday (August 4) to level the three-match series.

Chasing 236 to win after Sikandar Raza Butt's unbeaten 100 had given Zimbabwe a decent total, Guptill finished unbeaten on 116 while Latham was 110 not out as New Zealand achieved the target with almost eight overs to spare.

Guptill’s 138-ball knock included 11 boundaries and a six, while Latham scored his runs in 116 deliveries, hitting seven fours and two sixes.

Along the way, the pair set a new record for the highest successful chase in an ODI without losing a wicket, bettering the 231 that Sri Lanka got in a ten-wicket win over England at the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup quarterfinal.

Earlier, Raza came out with Zimbabwe struggling at 68 for 5, and hit 100 not out from 95 balls to guide his team to 235 for 9 after Elton Chigumbura had opted to bat when he won the toss.

The decision appeared to have backfired when Zimbabwe lost its top five inside the first 18 overs, with Grant Elliott using the swing on offer to dismiss Craig Ervine and Chigumbura, and Ish Sodhi (3 for 38) picking up his first two wickets in ODI cricket.

Raza helped to rebuild the innings in a 60-run stand for the sixth wicket with Sean Williams, but when Guptill ran Williams out and Zimbabwe slumped to 146 for 8, a respectable total appeared unlikely.

Raza then found support in Tinashe Panyangara, who made 33, and also enjoyed some fortune when he was dropped on 67. The pair added 89 runs for the ninth wicket, with Raza reaching his third ODI hundred off the penultimate delivery of the innings.

The series decider will take place at the same venue on Friday.
