New Zealand retains third spot in ODI rankings after series win in Zimbabwe

Williamson, Guptill and Elliott ascend batting rankings; Gains for Zimbabwe players in defeat

New Zealand retains third spot in ODI rankings after series win in Zimbabwe - Cricket News
New Zealand’s Mitchell McClenaghan has moved up to 39th position in the ICC Players Rankings for ODI Bowlers.

New Zealand has retained its third place position in the ICC ODI Team Rankings but has dropped two rankings points after its 2-1 series victory in Zimbabwe which concluded in Harare on Friday. Kane Williamson’s men have dropped down to 110 points, five adrift of India and one clear of South Africa, who it will face in a three-match ODI series later this month.

As a consequence of the series defeat, Zimbabwe remains in 11th place but has gained two rankings points on tenth-placed Ireland, who lies on 50 points.

Black Caps captain Williamson was the highest run-getter in the series and his tally of 187 runs in two innings (featuring scores of 97 and 90) has boosted the 25-year-old one place to a career high fourth in the ICC Player Rankings for ODI Batsmen. The Tauranga man now lies eight points behind Proteas batsman Hashim Amla who lies in third place on 806 points. Ross Taylor remains in eighth place but has gained seven points and has thus closed the gap on seventh-placed Shikhar Dhawan of India to 26 points after scoring 112 not out (his 15th century in 50-over internationals) in his only innings of the series. There were also notable gains for his team-mates Martin Guptill (up three places to 19th) and Grant Elliott (up one place to a career high 44th).

It was also a productive series for a number of Zimbabwe batsmen with Sean Williams moving up five places to 51st, while there were also gains for Hamilton Masakadza (up one to 57th), Sikandar Raza (up 12 places to 58th) and Chamu Chibhabha (up three places to 86th). However, Craig Ervine was the home side’s leading run-getter and his tally of 174 runs in three games included his debut century (130 not out) in ODI cricket. As a consequence, the 29-year-old has passed the 1,000 run mark in ODIs (1,035 runs in 35 matches to date) and has vaulted 17 places to a career high 76th.

In the ICC Players Rankings for ODI Bowlers, the top 10 remains unchanged though left-arm pace bowler Mitchell McClenaghan has vaulted nine places to 39th after taking four wickets for 138 in the three games. His team-mate Nathan McCullum has moved up eight places to 44th after taking the joint most wickets in the series overall (five for 147 runs) alongside Ish Sodhi, in what was the leg-spinner’s debut series. There was also good news for Zimbabwe’s Tinashe Panyangara who has moved up 15 places to 87th.

In the next ODI series, New Zealand will travel to face South Africa with the first of three ODIs due to start in Centurion on 19 August.

19 Aug – First ODI, Centurion (d/n)

23 Aug – Second ODI, Potchefstroom
