Amjad Javed guides UAE to nine-run victory

Mommsen wages lone battle as, chasing 149, Scotland is restricted to 139 for 9

Amjad Javed guides UAE to nine-run victory - Cricket News
Having won the toss and elected to bat, UAE recovered from a poor start to post 148 for 8, and then restricted Scotland to 139 for 9.
The one-off Twenty20 International between United Arab Emirates and Scotland at the ICC Academy Oval in Dubai on Thursday (February 4) boiled down to a battle of the captains as both leaders put up impressive performances. It was Amjad Javed, the UAE skipper, who came out victorious as his team pulled off a nine-run win.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, UAE recovered from a poor start to post 148 for 8, and then restricted Scotland to 139 for 9.

UAE lost Swapnil Patil and Mohammad Shahzad, its openers, within the Power Play. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, which meant the host's innings failed to gain any momentum.

It was only when Javed walked in at No. 5 that things began to turn in UAE's favour. The skipper smashed a 42-ball 76, guiding his team to a competitive total. His knock included five fours and five sixes.

Only three other UAE batsmen managed to reach double figures, but none of them touched the 20-run mark.

Safyaan Sharif, Scotland's right-arm pacer who picked up the wicket of Patil early in the innings, returned later on to grab three more wickets. He removed Javed in the final over of the innings to finish with figures of 4 for 24.

Scotland's chase got off to a disastrous start when it lost Kyle Coetzer to Mohammad Naveed off the very first ball of the innings. Callum McLeod and Matthew Cross tried to build a solid base, but went about it at a slow pace.

Scotland lost three wickets in the space of three overs to be reduced to 49 for 4 when Preston Mommsen, its captain, was joined by Richie Berrington. The pair put on 53 runs in 25 balls, before Berrington was dismissed for 16 in the 15th over.

After his dismissal, Mommsen fought a lone battle, as the next three batsmen all fell for single-figure scores. Mommsen scored 56 off 42 balls, including four boundaries and two sixes.

Mommsen's wicket marked the end of Scotland's challenge as it only managed nine runs off the last two overs to fall well short.

Naveed was UAE's most impressive bowler with figures of 2 for 16 off his four overs, including a maiden. Javed also picked up two wickets for 19 runs.
