United Arab Emirates ended the first day of its Intercontinental Cup clash against Scotland at Cambusdoon New Ground on 198 for 5 in Ayr on Tuesday (August 9). Rain meant there were only 59 overs bowled in the day, and it was Shaiman Anwar's patient 78 that allowed the visiting team to reach a respectable total after an early collapse.

The overcast conditions and a damp patch in the area around the bowler’s run-up delayed the start, with play only beginning at 3pm local time.

Sent to bat, UAE struggled early in the innings, losing Mohammed Qasim, the debutant opener, and Saqlain Haider in the ninth over. L Sreekumar departed soon after, leaving the side on a precarious 33 for 3 in 9.1 overs.

Anwar and Muhammad Usman added 33 runs to UAE's total before the latter was sent back by Alasdair Evans for 12. That brought Anwar and Rameez Shahzad together and the duo then consolidated with a fifth-wicket partnership of 123 off 197 balls. They batted for 33 overs to take the total to 189 before Anwar perished caught by Callum MacLeod inside the long off boundary off Mark Watt's bowling. Anwar's 129-ball knock comprised nine boundaries.

Rameez, unbeaten on 66, and Ahmed Raza (3 not out) then took UAE to stumps without any further hiccups.

Evans and Josh Davey ended with two wickets each, with Watt bagging one.
