The International Cricket Council (ICC) today thanked former England women’s captain Charlotte Edwards for her contribution to women’s cricket. Edwards, who won the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year award in 2008, announced her retirement from international cricket on Wednesday.

In a statement, ICC Chief Executive David Richardson said: “Charlotte has made an invaluable contribution to women’s cricket, her career coinciding with a period of unprecedented growth in the popularity, profile and quality of the women’s game. She has been a true ambassador of the sport and has inspired and motivated an entire generation of aspiring female cricketers around the globe.

“Her record as captain and top-order batsman has made her a household name, remaining the cornerstone of England’s top order for more than a decade.”

During her captaincy Charlotte led England to victory in every major women’s competition, whether it was the ICC Women’s World Cup, the ICC World Twenty20 or the Women’s Ashes which England won thrice.

“On behalf of the ICC, I wish to congratulate Charlotte on her career and wish her the best for her future. I hope that she will continue to remain associated with the sport in one form or the other.”

Edwards made her international debut as a 16-year-old in 1996. During a 20-year career, she made more international appearances than any other female cricketer in the history of the game, featuring in 23 Tests (10 as captain), 191 ODIs (117 as captain) and 95 T20Is (all as captain). She scored 1,676 Test runs, and 5,992 ODI runs, making her the all-time leading ODI run-scorer in women’s cricket. She has also scored 2,605 T20Is runs - more than any other men’s and women’s player in the shortest format of the game.
