In the Plate Championship – the battle to finish ninth in the competition – Afghanistan produced a four-wicket quarter-final win against Papua New Guinea, achieved with just six balls to spare.
The losers posted a score of 239-5 from their 50 overs, with captain Christopher Kent scoring 105 not out from 117 deliveries in Brisbane.
Afghanistan looked shaky at 59-3 but a terrific 85-run partnership for the seventh wicket between Mohibullah Paak (58 not out off 47 balls) and Afsar Khan (37 not out off 25 balls) saw them home with just an over to play.
In another quarter-final of the Plate Championship, Scotland defeated Zimbabwe by 41 runs in Brisbane.
The Scots scored 241-7 batting first, with Nicholas Farrar (58) and Peter Ross (43) leading the way.
And it proved too much for Zimbabwe, who had only Ryan Burl (52) pass 30, as they finished at 200-9 from their 50 overs.
