Having made its Under-19 World Cup debut in the first edition in 1998, South Africa will appear in the tournament for the ninth time in 2014.
South Africa U-19 has twice featured in the ICC U-19 World Cup final, in 2002 and 2008, but it failed to cross the final hurdle on both occasions. In 2002, it lost to Australia by seven wickets. The margin of defeat was 12 runs against India in 2008. South Africa could only manage three wins in five matches at the last World Cup, losing the Plate semi-final to Nepal.
Recently, South Africa also featured in a quadrangular series final against India, losing the match by 201 runs. The tournament also featured Australia and Zimbabwe.
