West Indies pace bowler Fidel Edwards is excited by the prospect of his team’s opening ICC World Twenty20 match against Australia on Saturday.

The game in Colombo pitches the two big guns of Group B together while dangerous outsiders Ireland play their opponents either side.

West Indies are the last of the group to get their programme underway and Edwards believes his side will be boosted by their most recent T20I meeting against Australia, a 14-run win in Bridgetown last March.

“It’s a big game,” said Edwards. “If we win that match it would set the standard. The last T20 we played against the Aussies in Barbados we won it and the guys are still confident from that result. It would be a big plus for us to beat them and get off to a winning start in this tournament. We won’t be targeting any one individual - we will be targeting everyone. They have a good team and to beat them you need to play total team cricket.”

West Indies ended their warm-up campaign with a convincing eight-wicket victory over Afghanistan on Monday. Edwards impressed with the ball as he took 3-24 and is hoping the display can serve as a good platform heading into the tournament opener.

“The result was pretty good for us. We did really well in the field, we bowled to our plans so you would have to say it was a good work-out for the bowlers in this match. We are trying to build up to Saturday when we face Australia,” Edwards concluded.
