Dockrell expecting to play key role

Irish spinner banks on Sri Lankan pitches to help his bowling

Dockrell expecting to play key role - Cricket News
Irish cricketers Kevin O'Brien (L) and George Dockrell (R) look on during an open media session.
Ireland spinner George Dockrell is banking on surfaces to favour his bowling during the ICC World T20.

The left-armer found conditions to his liking during his first two appearances in senior ICC tournaments at the ICC World T20 2010 and last year’s ICC Cricket World Cup.

Dockrell said: “I have been very lucky to play in places like Guyana during the last World T20 and in India during the last World Cup where the ball spun quite a lot. There was a lot of support for spinners. [It is] great to come to Sri Lanka where there is lot of spin.”

The 20-year-old has enjoyed a busy summer playing English domestic cricket with Somerset and captaining Ireland in the ICC Under-19 World Cup. Dockrell hopes the benefit of his 10 County Championship appearances in 2012 will particularly stand him in good stead during the WT20.

“It’s been great,” he said. “This year I’ve played lot of four-day cricket for [Somerset]. I had a great year this year. I think I am a better player because of county exposure.”

Dockrell will be hoping to get among the wickets during Thursday's warm-up match against Zimbabwe in Colombo.
