Prosper Utseya and Ray Price could be key cogs in Zimbabwe's wheel
Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor is banking on the experienced spin pair of Prosper Utseya and Ray Price to spring a surprise at the ICC World Twenty20 2012.
Speaking at the pre-event press conference, Taylor said his experienced spinners can combine well with the young seam bowlers at his command during the tournament.
“Spinners might come into play in the afternoon session of the tournament. We have got experienced spinners in Prosper (Utseya) and Ray (Price). They work well in tandem with our seam bowlers. So it will be a huge plus for us,’’ said Taylor.
The Zimbabwe captain is also hopeful of his top-order batsmen coming good during the tournament in order to be able to create a big upset in the tournament.
“If we have a great day with the bat, especially with our top-order coming good then anything is possible. We bank a lot on our faster men at the death of the innings. Hopefully that will continue to work for us. I am confident that we have got the players to adapt to the conditions here.’’
The right-handed wicketkeeper-batsman is also hoping to build on his experience of having played in the recent Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL).
“I have played here during last year’s ICC Cricket World Cup, then again this time during the SLPL, so I have a fair idea of the pitches. I have picked up quite a bit in the SLPL. It moves around a bit under the lights here as well. So it will be interesting to see how it pans out," added Taylor.
Zimbabwe is drawn in Group C alongside host Sri Lanka and South Africa. It will play at Hambantota’s Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium for the first-time ever.
But skipper Taylor has done his homework on the venue. “I have spoken to some of the local players about Hambantota. It will be an interesting venue for us to play. We are looking forward to it."
Zimbabwe have gained a lot as a squad in the last year. It beat a South Africa XI in a recent T20 series at home. Taylor is banking in the progress made by the group to show the world that it is one of the sides to watch out.
“It is really fantastic for us to play on the world stage. It is a great opportunity for us to play here. We have had some success in the last 12-24 months. We have stuck together and come through well. We have had some tough times in the past. It is great to be out here to showcase what we can do. There is no better place than the ICC World Twenty20. We are really excited to be here," concluded Taylor.
