Ireland captain William Porterfield is confident that his side make a statement at the ICC World Twenty20 2012.

Porterfield was speaking ahead of his side's opening match against Australia at the R Premadasa Stadium on Wednesday, 19 September.

"We are definitely here to make a statement. There is definitely no reason why we cannot go through the group stage. We have played in big games before and we have been in World Cups before. That is why we are here. The brand of cricket we play, I am sure we can continue to do well,'' said Porterfield.

The left-handed opener was however happy with his side's build-up to the tournament. "We have had two good wins against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. We have been in as many different scenarios as we wanted to be in. We have been there and done that. The side has had a few good workouts. It has been good going so far,'' added Porterfield.

The Ireland captain was particularly pleased with the options he now has in the bowling department following the two wins in the warm-up matches.

"Everyone has put their hand up. We also have Max Sorensen who played in the ICC World T20 Qualifier, but has not played so far. We obviously also have Tim Murtagh as well who has also been pretty well. Nigel Jones and Kevin O'Brien bowled well for us against Bangladesh. We have a nice selection headache,'' said Porterfield.

But the Ireland captain still saw some room for improvement. "The biggest improvement we want to see is on the field. We are not where we want to be and that has been the disappointing aspect so far. There is no excuse from us on that. But I am sure we will step up come Wednesday,'' concluded Porterfield.
