Batsmen seal win for Ireland

Helped along by Paul Stirling’s half-century, Ireland posts 166 for 5 before bowlers restrict Namibia to 134 for 7

Match Referee Dev Govindjee with man of the match Paul Stirling of Ireland after the match between Ireland and Namibia.

Ireland eased past Namibia by 32 runs in its Group A encounter at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Friday(November 15).

Namibia's decision to field first backfired as William Porterfield (33) and Paul Stirling (52) added 84 runs in 8.5 overs for the opening wicket. Once they were gone, the O’Brien bothers – Kevin (28) and Niall (26) – kept the runs flowing with a 32-run stand, before Gary Wilson chipped in with an unbeaten 20 off 13 balls towards the end to help Ireland stretch its total to a healthy 166 for 5.

“It’s nice to get back in the swing of things and start with a 50.  The most important thing is obviously the win, the lads played pretty well first up, and we’ve hopefully got our one loss out of the way in the warm-up game against Papua New Guinea, so, we’re just happy to be one-for-one and hopefully push on to tomorrow and the next day, and make it three from three.”, said Sterling.
Namibia started cautiously in its chase, as the openers added 34 runs in 4.3 overs, before Louis Petrus van der Westhuizen was castled by Alex Cusack, the experienced medium pacer, for 12. Namibia kept losing wickets at regular intervals and with most of the top-order unable to convert their starts, it could only manage 134 runs in its 20 overs.

Raymond van Schoor, the right-handed batsman, carried his form ahead from the warm-up games and remained unbeaten on 48 off 45 balls. Cusack finished with figures of 2 for 22, while Tim Murtagh and Max Sorensen finished with a wicket each for Ireland.
