Netherlands captain bags 1 for 22 and hits unbeaten 38 to secure comprehensive seven-wicket win over Afghanistan
Opting to bat first, Afghanistan put on a disappointing display, with Mohammad Shahzad (20), the opener, and Najibullah Zadran (19) being the only two batsmen to get to double figures. Netherlands' Mudassar Bukhari was the pick of the bowlers, returning figures of 2 for 7 off 3.1 overs. Paul van Meekeren, Pieter Seelaar and Ahsan Malik helped themselves to two wickets each while Peter Borren, the captain, dismissed Shahzad.
In reply, Netherlands lost Wesley Barresi, the opener, in the first ball of the innings, when he was castled by Shapoor Zadran. However, Netherlands recovered from the early blow as Stephen Myburgh (21) and Eric Szwarczynski (24) steadied the ship with a 39-run stand. Peter Borren, the captain, took his team home with an unbeaten 38 off just 15 balls, hitting two boundaries and four sixes. Mohammad Nabi, the off-break bowler, accounted for the wickets of Myburgh and Szwarczynski, finishing with figures of 2 for 18 off two overs.
