Opener’s 90 off 47 balls, shades Steven Taylor’s 91, as Italy beats USA by six wickets
Berg hit 15 fours and one six during his knock and was the dominant partner during both stands he was part of – a 69-run association for the first wicket with Andy Northcote (13), followed by a 33-run partnership for the second wicket with Peter Petricola (3). Following the dismissals of Berg and Damian Crowley, Carl Sandri (27 not out) and Alessandro Bonora took Italy home with four deliveries to spare.
Berg’s innings not only laid the foundation for Italy’s six-wicket win, but also put in shade the contribution of Steven Taylor, the USA opener, who also played a good hand, scoring 91 off 56 balls. USA had gotten off to a shaky start after electing to bat, with the score 38 for 2 in the eighth over. After that, Taylor and Karan Ganesh got together for a 102-run partnership off just 61 balls. Ganesh gave good support to Taylor, scoring 36 off 34 balls, before being run out. Taylor, who hit six fours and five sixes, helped USA finish on 160 for 5.
Gayashan Munasinghe’s right-arm medium-fast bowling fetched him the important wicket of Taylor, who was caught by Bonora, and Timroy Allen.
Italy will now face Uganda on Sunday, while USA prepares for a match against Ireland on Wednesday.
