Nabi smashes 33 off 16 balls, picks up 2 for 27
Afghanistan cruised to a comfortable eight-wicket win over Bermuda in a Group B encounter at the ICC Academy Oval on Wednesday (November 20).
Put in to bat, Bermuda’s innings never really took off. It kept losing wickets and folded for 101 runs in 18.1 overs. With eight batsmen failing to get into double figures, right-hand batsman Lionel Cann stood out for his 23-ball 28. Legbreak bowler Samiullah Shenwari finished with figures 3 for 20 and was very well supported by Shapoor Zadran, Karim Sadiq and skipper Mohammad Nabi, who all picked up two wickets each.
Chasing a paltry total, Afghanistan’s openers added 42 runs for the first wicket in 4.2 overs, before the left-arm medium pacer Kamau Leverock dismissed Nawroz Mangal for nine. Nabi then collaborated with Mohammad Shehzad for another 56-run stand. Afghanistan lost Nabi for a well-made 16-ball 33 with 98 runs on the board. Afghanistan sailed to victory in the tenth over, with Shehzad remaining unbeaten on a 36-ball 60.
Mohammad Shehzad was adjudged the Man of the Match.
It was Afghanistan's third win in four matches, and Nabi was full of praise for his bowlers. “Great performance today from the team, our bowlers put in brilliant effort to restrict Bermuda to 100 odd runs," he said. "We wanted to ensure that we chase the total quickly to gain on the run rate and our batsmen did well specially Shehzad. I am very happy with the overall team performance and confident of continuing to do so in our upcoming matches.”
