India Women bounced back in the second Twenty20 International against Sri Lanka Women, levelling the three-match series with a nine-run win in Vizianagaram on Sunday (January 26).
Batting first, India rode on useful contributions from a number of batters in the lower middle-order to reach 127 for 8 in 20 overs. The target proved nine runs too many for Sri Lanka, who had conceded the three-match One-Day International series 3-0 before winning the first T20I on Saturday.
At one stage, India was struggling at 29 for 4, having lost Mithali Raj, V Vanitha, Anagha Deshpande and Harmanpreet Kaur, its best batters. Udeshika Prabodhani inflicted the most damage, sending back Raj and Deshpande, both out bowled.
But after Veda Krishnamurthy steadied the innings with a 26-ball 16, India fought back through identical 23-run contributions – all scored at better than a run a ball – from Jhulan Goswami, Amita Sharma and Soniya Dabir, who remained unbeaten. It helped India reach a competitive total.
Prabodhani ended with 3 for 16, while Shashikala Siriwardene, the captain, returned figures of 2 for 24.
The highlight of Sri Lanka’s reply was a 41-run stand for the third wicket between Chamari Atapattu and Siriwardene, which threatened to derail India. But once Siriwardene fell after a 29-ball 21 and Atapattu followed after a run-a-ball 40, the innings fell apart. From 83 for 3 in the 14th over, Sri Lanka could only add another 35 runs for the loss of five more wickets to end on 118 for 8 after 20 overs.
The final T20I will be played in Visakhapatnam on Tuesday.
