Rain washes out Hong Kong-PNG game
Damp outfield forces Group A clash to be called off without a ball being bowled
Hong Kong and Papua New Guinea split the two points on offer after their ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier 2015 Group A game at the Bready Cricket Club on Monday (July 13) was washed out.
The two teams had come into the game on the back of contrasting results in their first games – PNG had beaten Jersey by 24 runs, while Hong Kong had lost by nine wickets to the same opposition. However, any hope the teams had of making progress was dashed by the sight that greeted them in the morning, with heavy overnight rain having left the outfield damp and soggy.
Grey clouds blanketed the venue, and rain continued to make intermittent appearances. The covers were rushed back on after initially being removed, and with the weather showing no signs of getting better, the match was eventually called off without a ball being bowled.
Hong Kong next faces Nepal, while PNG has a tough clash lined up against Ireland, both matches set to be played on Wednesday.
