Hong Kong, which is currently ranked 12th in the Twenty20 International teams table, will be led by Tanwir Afzal.

Hong Kong announced 15-man squads for the upcoming Asia Cup and the ICC World Twenty20 2016 tournaments on Thursday (January 28). Hong Kong, which is currently ranked 12th in the Twenty20 International teams table, will be led by Tanwir Afzal. Mark Chapman, who enjoyed a successful domestic season in New Zealand with Auckland, has been named vice-captain.

One of the notable inclusions in the squad for the ICC World Twenty20 is Ryan Campbell, the former Australia wicketkeeper-batsman. Campbell, 43, who is of Hong Kong-Chinese lineage, had moved to the territory in 2012 to take up a role as head coach of the Kowloon Cricket Club. Campbell has also represented the club as a player and is additionally the batting coach of the national team.

“I’m pretty nervous, to be honest,” Campbell said. “I’m there to mentor them as I have done for so long. It has been a while (since I played international cricket), but if you look at my numbers, I think I’m still one of the best batsmen in Hong Kong.”

Simon Cook, the head coach of the team, said Campbell's good form in the domestic circuit and his vast experience should augur well for Hong Kong. “His form in Hong Kong has been good in Premier League and Sunday games for Kowloon Cricket Club," Cook said.

“One of the things that we learned about our last WT20 tournament is that having that ability to think clearly in high pressure situations is critical and Ryan’s experience will be an enormous help in that regard.”

Campbell admitted that watching Brad Hogg, 44, play for Perth Scorchers in the latest instalment of the Big Bash League inspired him to make a comeback. “Brad Hogg is still going around for the Scorchers and I must admit he’s inspired me a bit to say age is just a number. It’s going to be an exciting couple of weeks.”

Despite being named in the squad, Campbell will continue to serve as the team's batting coach. Campbell, however, is not a part of the squad for the Asia Cup.

In order to be a part of the main draw of the Asia Cup to be played in the Twenty20 format for the first time, Hong Kong must go through a qualifying tournament, which will be played between February 19 and 22. Hong Kong will compete with three other teams - Afghanistan, Oman and UAE - to fill up the only spot available for the Associates who will join the four full member teams.

Hong Kong is in Group B in the ICC World Twenty20 2016 and will compete with Afghanistan, Scotland and Zimbabwe for a place in the Super 10 stage of the tournament.
