India vs Pakistan
Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester
June 16, 2019
10:30 AM BST
Preview: An epic encounter is on the cards as arch-rivals India and Pakistan take each other on at the iconic Old Trafford in Manchester on Sunday 16 June. India have never lost a World Cup match against Pakistan and are unbeaten in the tournament so far. Pakistan, on the other hand, are yet to break the duck against India as far as World Cup encounters are considered. Their overall form in the tournament hasn't been that impressive either. They have won just one and lost two out of their four matches so far, with one match being washed out by rain. Stakes are high for both sides in this match and an exciting contest can be expected.
KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli ( C) , Vijay Shankar/Dinesh Karthik, MS Dhoni (wk), Kedar Jadhav, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah
Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Babar Azam, Mohammad Hafeez, Sarfaraz Ahmed (C/wk) , Shoaib Malik, Asif Ali, Shadab Khan, Hasan Ali, Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Amir
Wicket-Keeper: MS Dhoni
Dhoni has an excellent average of 55.90 against Pakistan. He has shown good form with scores of 34 and 27 in the little time he has got to bat this tournament. He scored a hundred in the warm-up encounter against Bangladesh as well and as a result you can expect him to come good in this match as well.
Batsmen: Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Babar Azam
Kohli played an excellent knock of 82 against Australia and would be eager to do well against Pakistan. The last time India and Pakistan faced off in the World Cup (2015), Kohli scored a match-winning century. His excellent average of 45.90 against Pakistan sums up how consistent he has been against them.
With Shikhar Dhawan injured, Rahul will get to bat at his preferred opening position. He scored a hundred in the warm-ups and has a good chance of getting a big score here. Babar Azam averages in the 20s in the few matches he has played against India and he will be desperate to improve his record against them in this match.
All-Rounders: Hardik Pandya and Mohammad Hafeez
Hafeez is one of Pakistan's most experienced players in this tournament and he has a healthy batting average of 48.60. The last time he played against India was in the Champions Trophy Final of 2017 and ended up making a match-winning contribution of 57 runs. So, it is safe to say that he is one of the players you can rely on.
Pandya has been in fabulous all-round form. His contributions with bat and ball helped the Mumbai Indians to become the champions of 2019 Indian Premier League, and he has carried those performances into this World Cup. He was at his lethal best during his 48 off just 27 deliveries against Australia. He was the only Indian batsman to score a fifty against Pakistan during the Champions Trophy Final of 2017 and you can expect him to fire once again in this match. The thought of leaving him out shouldn't cross your mind.
Bowlers: Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz
Bumrah, Kumar and Chahal have all shown excellent bowling form in the tournament so far. Together they have accounted for 16 wickets at an excellent average of 18.94 and strike-rate of 22.5. Their overall economy rate of 5.05 has been mean considering the lofty standards of modern day cricket. All three bowlers are must-have players in your fantasy team.
As far as Amir and Riaz are concerned, bowling averages of 42.80 and 37.55 against India may not inspire much confidence in their abilities. However, they are the best that Pakistan have and the duo have been in excellent form in this tournament so far. They can be lethal on their day - Amir took a three-wicket haul in the 2017 Champions Trophy Final and Riaz grabbed a five-wicket haul in the 2015 World Cup encounter between these two teams.
Best Bet:Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya
Alternatives: MS Dhoni and Mohammad Hafeez
