Jos Buttler, the England wicketkeeper-batter, has been ruled out of the fifth and final Ashes Test against Australia in Hobart with a fractured left index finger.

Buttler will now fly back to the UK where he will be assessed by the medical team of the England Cricket Board. These are not the only injury worries for England from the drawn fourth Test in Sydney. The fitness of Ben Stokes (side strain) and Jonny Bairstow (right thumb) will also be monitored in the upcoming days.

Buttler is likely to be replaced in the playing XI by Sam Billings – who is expected to make his Test debut and don the gloves. Billings has played 25 ODIs and 33 T20Is for England.

Buttler's injury was confirmed by England captain Joe Root in the post-match presentation at the SCG. Root said: "Buttler is going home after this game, it's quite a bad injury. Real disappointment and shame to not have him at Hobart. The way he stood up for the team shows his character."

Buttler sustained the injury during Australia's first innings in Sydney. Ollie Pope took over the wicketkeeping duties during the second innings. Buttler has endured a disappointing series with the bat so far, only managing to score 107 runs in four matches.
