Biography

Born on July 28, 1936, Garfield Sobers is a former West Indies cricketer who played for the national side between 1954 and 1974, and is widely considered the greatest all-rounder to have played the game. Making his Test debut against England in March 1954, Sobers, who was originally selected for his bowling, soon found himself promoted up the batting order. Overall, Sobers played 93 Tests, scoring 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78, and taking 235 wickets at an average of 34.03 with his mix of medium pace and spin – finger and wrist – bowling and was also an outstanding fielder. Sobers was also the first to hit six sixes in an over – against Malcolm Nash in 1968 – in a first-class game and was knighted for his services to cricket in 1975.
