The first day of the ICC Women’s Emerging Nations Trophy in Bangkok saw some interesting matches as Thailand and Scotland were well tested by the Netherlands and Uganda, respectively, while the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Tanzania overcame Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Namibia with ease.

The tournament got underway when hosts Thailand faced the Netherlands in the morning match at the Terdthai Cricket Ground, where they recovered from an early batting collapse to win by 23 runs.

Nannapat Khoncharoenkai continued a rich vein of form with 26 runs, but Natthakan Chantam saw Thailand through to a total of 117 for seven after leg-spinners Caroline de Langer and Silver Siegars both took two wickets.

Suleeporn Laomi was named Player of the Match for her figures of two for 11 and an economy rate of 2.75 as it was a fine team performance. Fellow spinners Thipatcha Putthawong and Onnicha Kamchomphu also took two wickets but the key for Thailand’s victory was a measured innings of 39 from Natthakan who helped her side recover from a position of 69 for six.

Scotland were also tested by Uganda in the afternoon match at the same venue as the Scots faltered after looking set for a big score. Darcy Carter hit an unbeaten 54 but she could only watch as a succession of partners were lost as she approached her fifty. Scotland managed 115 for nine in their 20 overs.

The Uganda innings began with 17-year-old left-arm seamer Mollie Parker claiming a wicket with her second ball in international cricket when she trapped captain Janet Mbabzi LBW for a duck with a perfect inswinger.

Uganda recovered valiantly, reaching 58 for one at the halfway stage so they were up with the rate thanks to a second-wicket partnership of 64 between Esther Iloko and Immaculate Nakisuuyi.
