Young Pucovski joins Bradman, Ponting in exclusive club

Australia news

Will Pucovski, the Victoria batsman, scored a first-class career-best 243 against Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield on Wednesday, 17 October.

That put Pucovski, the highly-rated youngster, in an elite club of just nine players to have scored a double-century in Australia’s foremost first-class competition before turning 21.

Some of the members of the club are among the greatest Australian batsmen ever – Don Bradman expectedly features in the list, and also has the highest score among the nine, while the last one to have entered the group before Pucovski is Ricky Ponting, back in 1994.

Batsman Age Score Match details

The first one to have scored a Sheffield Shield double-century before turning 21 was Clem Hill, the champion batsman from the late 1800s. Interestingly, Hill made his Test debut the same year – 1896 – as when he reached the landmark.

It was Pucovski’s second century in just his seventh first-class match. He had earlier scored 188 at Melbourne Cricket Ground against Queensland last season.

“I was actually talking to Dad about it probably a month or two ago, saying ‘when you get that second one it will almost be more special because you've got that one but you want to be able to back it up’. Hopefully it's not the last one I make but it was pretty special today to get that done,” he was quoted as saying by afterwards.
