Records galore as India clinch ODI series against West Indies
The visitors piled on a milestone total but the hosts led by skipper Shubman Gill completed a record chase in Guwahati.
In a record-breaking tussle in Guwahati, India pulled off the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history, hunting down West Indies’ massive target of 406 in just 43.3 overs.
Playing in extraordinary batting conditions, the match featured a total of five individual centuries, headlined by Indian skipper Shubman Gill’s unbeaten double-hundred.
Openers Rohit Sharma (101 off 75 balls) and Gill made light work of the target with a dominant 255-run opening stand, India's highest ever partnership on home soil.
Rohit scored his 35th ODI century, before being dismissed LBW by Jayden Seales. During his knock, Rohit also passed 12,000 ODI runs. At 39 years old, he became the oldest Indian batter to score an ODI ton.
Gill, on the other hand, produced a landmark innings, scoring an unbeaten 223* off 133 balls, bringing up his double-century off just 117 balls, breaking the record for the fastest double-hundred in ODI history.
The 27-year-old also broke several other records, such as the highest score in a successful chase in ODIs and the fastest hundred for an Indian captain in ODIs which he notched up in 62 balls.
Contributions from Virat Kohli (29 off 19 balls) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (30* off 36 balls) allowed India to comfortably chase the target in the 44th over, taking an unassailable lead in the ODI series.
Earlier in the day, West Indies secured their highest-ever total in Men’s ODI history, as they scored 405/7 batting first in the second ODI against India.
Trailing 1-0 in the three-match series, the tourists were led by remarkable centuries from opener John Campbell (101), captain Shai Hope (104) and Amir Jangoo (114).
The total, marking the first time they crossed past the 400-run mark, eclipses their previous best of 389, which they compiled against England back in 2019.

Meanwhile, Hope, who scored a scintillating 20th ODI century, got past former Windies captain and ICC Hall of Famer Brian Lara in the tally of most ODI centuries for the West Indies.
Hope is now only behind Chris Gayle (25) as the second-most prolific centurion in the 50-overs format for the West Indies.
For India, Kuldeep Yadav was once again the pick of the bowlers on a tough outing for the hosts with the ball.
The left-arm spinner, who ended up with bowling figures of 2/65, became the fastest Indian spinner and third-fastest spinner overall to clinch 200 ODI wickets.
Kuldeep is now only the ninth Indian bowler to achieve the milestone in ODI cricket. Having made his debut back in 2017, the chinaman spinner took only 123 games to register the feat.
The ongoing ODI series between India and the West Indies offers key preparation for the next year's ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027.
