Records galore during Gill masterclass at Edgbaston 

Building on a strong start on Day 1 of the second Test after being asked to bat by England skipper Ben Stokes, India built further on their advantage with Gill shattering multiple records in his knock so far.

With handy support from Ravindra Jadeja (89) and Washington Sundar (42), India captain Shubman Gill led the team past their first total of 500 on the tour.

Having scored his second successive century of the series on the first day, the Indian skipper slammed his maiden Test double hundred during the second session of play in the 122nd over.

This was the first-ever Test double hundred by an Indian skipper in England. This was also just the second Test double century by an India skipper away from home, with Virat Kohli having achieved the feat against the West Indies in 2016.

Gill kept going for his shots and soon ran past the score of 221 achieved by India great Sunil Gavaskar in 1979, making him the India batter with the highest Test score in England.

As he went past 241, he broke Sachin Tendulkar's 21-year-old record of having the highest score by an India batter in overseas (barring India and other Asian countries) conditions.

Tendulkar had scored a brilliant 241* against Australia in Sydney in 2004. In the 133rd over, he edged one past the wicketkeeper off Harry Brook to bring up his 250. This was just the ninth occasion that an India batter had crossed the landmark.

Gill’s stand with Jadeja proved to be the turning point in India’s innings, as the duo took the visitors from a precarious 211/5 to 414/6 till Jadeja's dismissal. This was just the third stand of over 200 runs for the sixth wicket for India in England.

In 2022, Jadeja had stitched a partnership of 222 runs with Rishabh Pant at the same ground.

After Jadeja's dismissal, Gill shared a 144 run stand with Sundar. This was India's second-best stand for the seventh wicket in England after the unbeaten partnership of 160 runs between Sachin Tendulkar and Manoj Prabhakar in 1990.

India concluded the second session at 564/7, with Gill still unbeaten on 265, alongside Akash Deep.

Gill added four more runs before he fell to Josh Tongue on 269, having achieved the second-highest score by an Asian batter in England after Zaheer Abbas's 274, which also came in Birmingham in 1971.

Overall this was the seventh-highest score by an India batter in Tests, sitting just one short of Rahul Dravid's epic 270 in Rawalpindi in 2004.

India were eventually bowled out for 587.
