Varma backs India’s flexible batting approach
India middle-order batter Tilak Varma underlined the importance of adaptability and a team-first mindset ahead of India’s third T20I against South Africa on December 14.
In the aftermath of India’s loss to South Africa in the second T20I, much has been made about India’s batting order choices, with the decision to send Axar Patel up to No.3 coming under scrutiny. The all-rounder scored a run-a-ball 21, leaving a number of people wondering if a more recognised batter could've exploited the situation better.
Addressing questions surrounding India’s batting approach ahead of the third T20I, middle-order batter Tilak Varma, who had scored a valiant knock of 62 in the loss, stressed on the importance of situational awareness and clarity within the side.
“Everyone is flexible, except openers. I’m up for batting at 3, 4, 5, or 6, wherever I get a chance. Everyone knows that everyone is flexible in [the batting] order.”
The 23-year-old has primarily batted at number three or number four for India, where he has found great success. Both his centuries in T20Is were from the number three position against South Africa in November last year.

He was also in sparkling form in the Asia Cup 2025, where he batted primarily at number four position but also slipped down the order when required. Varma scored 213 runs in the tournament, including an impressive 69* in the final when India were under pressure in the chase against Pakistan.
Discussing Axar in particular, Varma cited past instances where the moves to promote him have worked well, such as the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Final. Axar batted at No.5 in the all-important game and scored a brisk 47 off 31 to lift India’s scoring rate.
“As you can see, Axar Patel has already done the same thing in the (T20) World Cup. And he has done well in that position as well.”
“Like I said, everyone is flexible. And the decision that team feels it's going to be beneficial that day, we take that call.”
Backing the principle of a flexible batting order further, Varma stated how the stress remained on sticking to basics.
“We've been practicing since childhood. So there's not much effect in practice. Because we follow the basics. Like I said, it makes a big difference in the mindset. If you're mentally strong, you'll be successful everywhere.”
“So in my mind, I just want to be mentally strong. And wherever I go, I just think about what I can do for the team.”
India will now face South Africa in their third T20I of their series in Dharamshala on December 14.
