West Indies seize control despite Mahmud's six-for
Bangladesh’s batting unit took a hit after opener Shadman Islam’s twisted his ankle while fielding early on Day 2 of the second Test and was unable to return to the field.
A resilient century from Amir Jangoo (133 off 212) made sure the West Indies put up 356 on the board in the first innings of the second ICC World Championship Test against Bangladesh in Sylhet.
Hasan Mahmud provided the counter-attack for the home side, snapping his fifth five-for in Test cricket, finishing with figures of 6/90.
Bangladesh were also dealt a massive blow in the form of opener Shadman Islam ankle injury that made him unable to return to the field.
The incident occurred in the 78th over when Jangoo steered a delivery from Mehidy Hasan Miraz towards fine leg. Shadman ran in from slip to retrieve the ball but lost his footing while attempting to pick it up, twisting his ankle in the fall.
The injury meant that Nayeem Hasan, who hadn't batted above No. 8 before this match, was sent out to open Bangladesh’s innings alongside Tanzid Hasan.
Having begun the day at 235/4, the visitors were made to toil hard for runs.
Justin Greaves made 51, complimenting Jangoo’s superb century, while Joshua Bishop (23), Shamar Joseph (16), Jomel Warrican (27*) and Jayden Seales (15) made valuable contributions to push the Windies past 350, despite Mahmud’s brilliant six-wicket haul.
In return, a shaky start followed for Bangladesh, as their replacement opener Hasan wasn’t able to tick on and was dismissed for just five runs by Seales.
Tanzid (16) followed soon after when debutant Kevin Wickham caught an absolute screamer off Greaves’ delivery.
Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto showed resistance but his knock was cut-short on 18 off 65 by Shamar Joseph’s perfectly executed ball that sent the off stump flying.
Bangladesh eventually ended the day at 88/3, trailing West Indies by 268 runs when stumps were called on Day 2.
