A brilliant Irish fight back helped it establish a strong position after the opening day of the ICC Intercontinental Cup game against a Zimbabwe XI on Monday.

Andrew White (97 not out) helped the visitors establish 340-6 at stumps. Alongside Kevin O'Brien (71) and Gary Wilson (47) he helped build a strong recovery after it had lost some early wickets.

White, who had made half centuries in both innings in his side's previous match against Canada, hit eleven boundaries in his 154 balls at the crease and will resume on Tuesday looking for a century.

Skipper William Porterfield had earlier made a solid 51, showing a calm head when Ireland had been produced to 72-3 in the 14th over.

Shingirai Masakadza (2-75) and Natsai Mushangwe (2-77) both claimed two wickets for the home side.
