UAE middle-order batsman Naeemuddin Aslam smashed an unbeaten century to help his side set up a massive total on the first day of the four-day ICC Intercontinental Shield match against Uganda played at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday. The right-hander smashed an unbeaten 120 runs in 196 balls as UAE finished the day at 314-9 in 98 overs.

Put on to bat first, the home team lost an early wicket in Arfan Haider with the scoreboard 5-1 in the second over. Skipper Khurram Khan then made light work of the bowling attack as he hit 87 runs with able support from Arshad Ali (33) to push the score to 176-4. Aslam, coming in at number five, then continued the onslaught with an unbeaten century complete with fifteen boundaries as the side ended the first day with a wicket to spare.

Right-arm off-break spinner Frank Nsubuga was the pick of the bowlers taking figures of 3-61 and also coordinating a run-out with keeper Lawrence Sematimba to dismiss Amjad Jawed for 15 runs. Dennis Tabby, who claimed the dangerous wicket of the UAE skipper, and Ronald Ssemanda shared two wickets apiece.

The two teams fight it out with the winner claiming the top spot in the ICC Intercontinental Shield standings. Uganda is currently top of the table at 20 points after an outright win over Bermuda by seven wickets in August 2009 while UAE is second after its win over Namibia by four wickets in December.

The four-team ICC Intercontinental Shield competition will see a final played in Dubai from 25-28 November 2010.
