Ura ton gives PNG big win - Cricket News
Tony Ura’s century took Papua New Guinea to a 52-run win over Netherlands.
Tony Ura’s brilliant century took Papua New Guinea to a 52-run win over Netherlands in a Group B match of the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier at the ICC Academy in Dubai on Saturday (November 16).
Put in to bat, PNG lost its first wicket when Asad Vala (20) was caught by Peter Borren, the Netherlands captain, off Ahsan Malik. Following Vala’s wicket, Ura, along with Kila Pala (57), dominated proceedings with a 127-run partnership off just 75 balls. Pala hit three fours and four sixes in his 40-ball knock, before being caught off Borren. Ura smashed 100 off just 60 balls, studded with nine boundaries and four sixes, before falling in the final over. His innings had given PNG a mammoth 193 for 3 on the board after 20 overs.
In reply, the Netherlands chase was derailed early, and it soon found itself precariously placed at 15 for 5 in the fourth over. The top order’s failure was redeemed by a late surge with some useful knocks from Ben Cooper (27), Michael Rippon (50 not out), and Pieter Seelaar (25), but it only served to delay defeat. Netherlands couldn’t recover well enough from its start to chase down the big total, and finished on 141 for 9. Rippon, who faced 40 balls, was the side’s highest scorer.
Norman Vanua, who opened the bowling for PNG, returned impressive figures of 3 for 12 in three overs. He was ably supported by Charles Amini, who finished with 2 for 24 in four overs. Willie Gavera, Chris Amini and Vala finished with a wicket each against their names.
