Luke Jongwe scored a 111-ball 80 as to help Zimbabwe post 205.
Luke Jongwe’s 111-ball 80 helped Zimbabwe recover from a shaky start and go on to register an 84-run win in the 11th place play-off match of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in Abu Dhabi on Thursday (February 27).

Chasing 206 at Sheikh Zayed Stadium Nursery 1, UAE was restricted to 121 for 9 after 50 overs after a disciplined effort from the Zimbabwe bowlers.

Joylord Gumbie, the captain, elected to bat and was the first to depart, caught off Waruna Perera's bowling, as Zimbabwe slumped to 78 for 5 in the 20th over.

Jongwe, along with Shoun Handirisi, the wicketkeeper, then came together for a 77-run stand, to lead Zimbabwe’s fightback. But after the latter’s dismissal in the 38th over, Zimbabwe could manage only 205 all out after the conclusion of 50 overs. Handirisi made 38 in 60 balls while Jongwe stroked seven boundaries and a six en route to 80.

Moaaz Qazi, the offspinner, stood out with the ball for UAE, returning figures of 3 for 35 in ten overs. Perera and Sajid Khan took two wickets each while Omer Mohammed and Justin James took a wicket apiece.

Zimbabwe’s bowlers came up with a spirited effort in response, reducing the opposition to 14 for 4 in 6.1 overs. Rohit Singh, the captain, who top-scored with 30, joined Shivank Vijayakumar (24), the wicketkeeper, for a 56-run stand, but that was the only partnership of note. With the Zimbabwe bowlers making frequent inroads, UAE could only muster 121 for 9 after 50 overs as Zimbabwe cruised to an 84-run win.

Kieran Geyle, the left-arm spinner, took 3 for 20 in ten overs, to finish as the pick of the Zimbabwe bowlers. Herbert Chikomba impressed with his left-arm spin as well, returning figures of 3 for 21.
