We've learnt a lot, says Hong Kong captain, after his side's 114-run defeat to Namibia in its first-ever appearance at the Intercontinental Cup

Jamie Atkinson said that while the loss was disappointing, it was a good learning experience, which can be taken into the next round.
Hong Kong captain Jamie Atkinson has admitted that his side learnt a lot from the opening match of the ICC Intercontinental Cup 2015-17, which it lost by 114 runs against Namibia in Windhoek.

Resuming the final day on Wednesday at three for no wicket and chasing 304 runs for victory, the visitors were dismissed for 187 with debutants Skhawat Ali and Haseeb Ajmad scoring 43 and 41 runs respectively. For Namibia, Bernard Scholtz bagged three for 53 while Nicolaas Scholtz, Christopher Coombe and Sarel Burger claimed two wickets apiece.

This was Hong Kong’s first first-class match since 2005 when it lost to the UAE and drew with Nepal in the same competition.

"It was a disappointing result for the team,” said Atkinson. “We were chasing the game once we were behind in the first innings and the Namibians batted very sensibly and built a healthy lead which proved too much for us.

"We've learnt a lot from the game seeing we had eight first-class debutants and that can be taken into round two.”

Apart from Skhawat Ali and Haseeb Amjad, six other Hong Kong players who made their first-class debuts in this fixture included Babar Hayat, Ehsan Nawaz, Roy Lamsam, Nizakat Khan, Tanwir Afzal and Waqas Barkat.

Atkinson said his side was aiming to learn and improve in this tournament. "The ICC Intercontinental Cup is a very tough competition that tests teams mentally and physically. It's vital that associates play plenty of this cricket and sides will only improve."

Both the sides will now play two 50-over matches in the one-day ICC World Cricket League Championship. These matches will be played on 15 and 17 May in Windhoek.
