Cricket World Cup memories – Sir Viv Richards

Richards

Richards, now 66, is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest batsmen to have played the game, scored 15,261 runs in 121 Tests and 187 one-day internationals.

He was a livewire in the field in the inaugural edition of the World Cup in 1975, when he ran out three batsmen – Alan Turner, Ian Chappell and Greg Chappell. The dismissal of the older Chappell brother was a turning point in the game, which the Windies won by 17 runs.

Richards followed up his heroics in 1975 with a belligerent century in the 1979 final, where he was the Player of the Match for his 157-ball 138*.

"Achieving things collectively was always one of my aims. To have done that for the Windies (in 1975) – all the other stuff would be secondary to that," said the former West Indian captain.
